Cover Story: As six-axis industrial robots become indispensable in manufacturing, the challenge of programming them efficiently grows. This study introduces a smart algorithm that uses a robot’s redundant degree of freedom (i.e., the rotation around its end-effector axis) to minimize energy consumption during motion. Implemented within an NC post-processor solution, the method requires no workflow changes and ensures continuous toolpath motion. Tests on a KUKA KR60 HA robot showed a 7.5% reduction in total energy use, which confirms that an effective step toward greener and more sustainable robotic manufacturing has been achieved. The algorithm can be used for many technological robot applications performed with various end effectors. View this paper
