Cover Story: Mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) is a multisystemic immunologic disorder with a diverse symptomatology affecting an estimated 17% of the population. Neurologic and psychiatric manifestations of MCAS are numerous and include headache, neuropathy, dysautonomia, anxiety, depression, panic disorder and many others. MCAS is caused by aberrant mast cell reactivity and can be difficult to diagnose, which often leads to missed or delayed diagnosis for decades. We describe a case series of patients with neurologic and psychiatric disorders who were refractory to standard medical therapeutics. Their neuropsychiatric symptoms improved significantly only after MCAS was diagnosed and mast-cell-directed therapies were instituted. View this paper
