Cover Story: Atomic force microscopy height and phase-contrast images illustrate the mineral-specific interaction of colloidal silica with semi-soluble salt-type minerals. On calcite (top), surface reactivity, hydration behavior, and crystallographic structure create a favorable environment for nanoparticle attachment, promoting localized adsorption and confined morphological changes. In contrast, apatite (bottom) shows extensive restructuring consistent with a dissolution–reprecipitation mechanism. These distinct responses explain the selective depression of calcite in flotation. Moreover, the study highlights colloidal silica as a multifunctional reagent acting through different subprocesses of the flotation process. View this paper
