Cover Story: Natural antimicrobial peptides are considered as potential lead molecules for developing new antibiotic drugs-addressing the emerging problem of antibiotic resistance. In this study, two novel peptides, named turgencin A and turgencin B, were isolated and characterized from the Arctic colonial ascidian Synoicum turgens. The peptides are post-translationally modified, containing methionines with different degrees of oxidation, amidated C-terminus, and six cysteines with an unusual disulfide connectivity of Cys1-Cys6, Cys2-Cys5, and Cys3-Cys4. Turgencin A, with one oxidized methionine, display antimicrobial activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria with minimum inhibitory concentrations as low as 0.4 µM against selected bacterial strains.
