December 2023 - 106 articles

Cover Story: This month's cover focuses on Alsaghir and Bahk, who propose using all solid-state thermoelectric (TE) generators to convert medium-grade waste heat from the exhaust duct of a gas turbine power plant into electricity, thus improving the overall system efficiency. Detailed modeling and design optimization strategies are provided for such a TE system under realistic operation conditions, and conduct exergy analysis for the TE system. The proposed TE system can achieve a power output of ~10 KW with an efficiency of ~5 % from a gas turbine power plant's 2 m long, 0.5 × 0.5 m2 cross-sectional area exhaust duct.

How Quantum Mechanics Requires Non-Additive Measures

  • Gabriele Carcassi and
  • Christine A. Aidala

18 December 2023

Measure theory is used in physics, not just to capture classical probability, but also to quantify the number of states. In previous works, we found that state quantification plays a foundational role in classical mechanics, and, therefore, we set ou...

16 December 2023

The spin-1/2 quantum transverse Ising model, defined on a ladder structure, with nearest-neighbor and four-spin interaction on a plaquette, was studied by using exact diagonalization on finite ladders together with finite-size-scaling procedures. The...
