Advanced Combustion and Energy Conversion Technologies for Next-Generation Powertrains

Dear Colleagues,

To reduce energy use and emissions, all road cars need an engine management system to control the powerplant. Transportation produces nearly 30% of greenhouse gas emissions, and stricter emissions laws are being enforced to limit environmental impact. With around 100 million vehicles made yearly (reference), better combustion and energy conversion technologies are needed for next-generation powertrains. These must be efficient and operate safely. As electrification grows, various powertrain systems have developed, including hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), electric vehicles (EVs), and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). Each has different control needs, forming a diverse set of systems from combustion engines to electric motors, transmissions, energy conversion, battery management, and recharging.

This Special Issue, titled ‘Advanced Combustion and Energy Conversion Technologies for Next-Generation Powertrains’, will curate novel developments in research about the advanced combustion and energy conversion technologies applied to next-generation powertrains. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Pressure gain combustion to increase the ratio of engine maximum pressure over brake mean effective pressure;
• Advanced emission control systems to achieve clean energy goals;
• Advanced control systems to manage the complex interactions between different components in hybrid powertrains;
• Advanced internal combustion engines in hybrid vehicles optimized to work with electric motors, improving overall fuel economy and reducing emissions.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
