Biodegradable Polymers for Agricultural Engineering
This special issue belongs to the section "Circular and Green Sustainable Polymer Science".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The extensive use of conventional plastics in agricultural engineering, including mulch films, greenhouse coverings, agro-packaging, and controlled-release delivery systems, has raised significant environmental concerns due to their persistence and accumulation in soil ecosystems. Consequently, there is growing interest in biodegradable and bio-based polymeric materials that can provide adequate functional performance during use while undergoing environmentally compatible degradation after their intended service life. Biodegradable polymers derived from renewable resources such as polysaccharides, proteins, lipids, and bio-based synthetic polymers offer promising alternatives for sustainable agricultural applications.
In this context, this Special Issue focuses on the design, modification, characterization, and biodegradation behavior of biodegradable polymers for agricultural engineering. Emphasis is placed on understanding structure–property–degradation relationships under realistic agricultural conditions, including soil, microbial, enzymatic, hydrolytic, and environmentally induced degradation. Contributions addressing polymer blends, composites, surface modification strategies, and green processing routes aimed at enhancing durability, functionality, and controlled biodegradation are especially encouraged.
Key application areas include biodegradable mulch films, seed coatings, fertilizer and pesticide controlled-release systems, soil-conditioning materials, and sustainable packaging for agricultural products. Studies integrating advanced characterization techniques, soil and field degradation assessments, life-cycle analysis, and sustainability metrics to evaluate environmental fate and end-of-life performance are also welcome. By consolidating interdisciplinary research across polymer science, materials engineering, and agricultural systems, this Special Issue aims to promote the development and practical adoption of biodegradable polymers that support sustainable agricultural engineering practices.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Polymers is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
