Plant Gene Families and Functional Regulation in Crop Development
This special issue belongs to the section "Plant Genetics, Genomics and Biotechnology".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Plant gene families play a central role in regulating growth, development, and stress responses in crops. With rapid advances in genomics and functional genomics, numerous gene families have been identified across major crop species. However, understanding how these gene families function coordinately to regulate complex agronomic traits remains a key challenge.
This Special Issue, “Plant Gene Families and Functional Regulation in Crop Development”, invites high-quality original research and review articles exploring the structural organization, evolutionary dynamics, expression regulation, and functional mechanisms of plant gene families. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Genome-wide identification and phylogenetic analysis of gene families in crop plants;
- Functional characterization of gene families involved in yield, flowering, root development, and organ formation;
- Transcriptional, post-transcriptional, and epigenetic regulation of gene family members;
- Gene family responses to abiotic and biotic stresses during crop development;
- Use of CRISPR/Cas9, overexpression, or RNAi to study gene family function;
- Comparative genomics and synteny analysis of gene families across species.
We welcome submissions from researchers working on model plants as well as staple and orphan crops. By bringing together diverse studies on gene family biology, this Special Issue will contribute to a systems-level understanding of crop development and provide potential targets for molecular breeding. We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Plants is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
