Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Salinity and water deficit represent a significant environmental challenge that detrimentally affects plant growth and development. When working with salt-tolerant plants, it is crucial to understand physiological, biochemical, and molecular responses and adaptations to salt stress, as well as to explore natural genetic resources linked to salt tolerance. On the other hand, water stress negatively impacts numerous aspects of plant physiology, particularly photosynthetic capacity. Prolonged stress severely impairs plant growth and productivity. Plants have evolved complex physiological and biochemical adaptations to adjust to and cope with various environmental stress conditions. In this Special Issue, we aim to provide a detailed overview of the mechanisms underlying the morphological and physiological responses triggered by salt and water stress, including plant damage, alterations in cellular osmotic potential and ionic homeostasis, lipid peroxidation, and the inhibition of photosynthesis and growth, and to address the systems regulating plant adaptation to water stress through sophisticated regulatory networks. We also aim to propose and analyze the molecular mechanisms plants employ to enhance stress tolerance and maintain homeostasis and appropriate hormonal responses. Furthermore, we seek to analyze the physiological mechanisms conferring salt tolerance in plants, such as osmotic adjustment, reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging, photosynthetic responses, phytohormone regulation, and ionic regulation. Additionally, we will summarize salt stress perception and signaling pathways, gene regulatory networks, and salt tolerance mechanisms in plants. Overall, this Special Issue aims to provide essential information for the future cultivation and breeding of agricultural and fruit crops.
