Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Plants are constantly threatened by a wide spectrum of pathogenic microbes, including bacteria, fungi and oomycetes, which severely reduce crop yield and quality and threaten global food security. During long-term co-evolution with invading pathogens, plants have evolved a sophisticated two-tiered innate immune system to defend against microbial attacks. Plasma membrane-localized receptors and intracellular immune receptors perceive pathogen-derived molecular patterns and secreted effectors, thereby activating pattern-triggered immunity (PTI) and effector-triggered immunity (ETI), respectively. Accurate molecular recognition of invasive pathogens, dynamic modulation of immune responses, and orderly intracellular transduction of immune signals are three core pillars that govern the activation of plant defense responses. Nevertheless, the intricate regulatory networks linking upstream immune receptor perception and downstream immune signaling cascades have not yet been fully deciphered.

The continuous conflict between plants and pathogens drives the rapid evolution of both host immune systems and pathogen virulence mechanisms. Pathogens secrete diverse effectors to suppress plant immune responses, while plants evolve specific intracellular receptors to recognize these effectors and trigger robust immune reactions. Clarifying the key molecular mechanisms underlying plant immune recognition, immune modulation and signal transduction is essential to dissect plant–pathogen interaction networks and develop durable disease resistance in crops.

This Special Issue welcomes high-quality original research papers, review articles and methodology papers focusing on molecular recognition and regulatory mechanisms in plant immunity. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Molecular mechanism of pathogen-associated molecular pattern (PAMP) and effector recognition by plant immune receptors;

- Key components and regulatory mechanisms of PTI and ETI signaling cascades;

- Calcium signaling, ROS signaling, MAPK cascades and phytohormone crosstalk in plant immune responses;

- Pathogen effector-mediated immune suppression and host immune escape strategies;

- Multi-omics analysis of plant immune signal networks during host–pathogen interactions;

- Application of gene editing and synthetic biology in modifying plant immune pathways for disease resistance breeding.

We sincerely invite researchers across relevant fields to submit original research, review and methodological manuscripts to this Special Issue. Joint exploration of plant immune molecular mechanisms will facilitate the creation of long-lasting crop disease resistance and secure the global food supply. Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
