Metal–Organic Frameworks for Pharmaceutical Applications
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are garnering more attention in pharmaceutical research due to their modular architecture, which can be tailored in size and shape from the nanoscale to the microscale. Their high porosity, structural versatility, and functional tunability offer unique opportunities to address challenges in drug delivery and biomedical innovation. At the nanoscale, MOFs are being explored for systemic applications such as targeted drug delivery, controlled release, and advanced imaging, where small particle sizes are critical for circulation and tissue penetration. At the microscale, MOFs and MOF-based composites hold promise for localized or oral delivery systems, where larger carriers can function as depots or be incorporated into implantable devices for sustained therapeutic release.
This Special Issue of Pharmaceutics aims to discuss the latest advances in this rapidly developing field. We welcome contributions that highlight innovative MOF designs for improving stability, biocompatibility, and release kinetics and hybrid systems that integrate MOFs with polymers, biomolecules, or nanoparticles. Imaging and theranostic applications are of particular interest, given the emerging role of MOFs in bridging diagnostics with therapy. In addition, studies that apply artificial intelligence or machine learning to accelerate the discovery of MOFs, optimize formulations, or predict pharmaceutical performance are encouraged. We additionally seek papers that investigate translational challenges, including safety evaluations, the scalable synthesis of MOF formulations, and regulatory considerations.
By gathering interdisciplinary perspectives, this Special Issue aims to capture the potential of MOFs to revolutionize pharmaceutical science and healthcare. We look forward to showcasing contributions that chart the path toward smarter, more efficient treatments.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Pharmaceutics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
