Microbiome, Immunity, and Cancer: Deciphering the Intricate Crosstalk and Regulatory Networks

Dear Colleagues,

The dynamic interplay among the host microbiome, immune system, and cancer represents a critical and rapidly evolving frontier in oncology. This Special Issue of Nutrients invites original research and comprehensive review articles aimed at elucidating how microbial communities influence carcinogenesis, tumor progression, and, importantly, the efficacy and toxicity of anti-cancer therapies. In addition to the traditional focus on the gut microbiome, this Special Issue places particular emphasis on the emerging role of the intratumoral microbiome and its direct regulatory functions within the tumor microenvironment.

We particularly welcome studies that characterize the gut and intratumoral microbiome, as well as the associated immune responses, to shed light on the complex regulatory networks that govern this crosstalk. Submissions exploring the bidirectional interactions between microbiota and the immune system in cancer initiation, progression, and therapeutic response are of special interest. Moreover, we welcome contributions that propose innovative strategies to modulate the microbiota–immunity–cancer axis for therapeutic purposes. We especially encourage manuscripts that investigate how dietary patterns, specific nutrients, and bioactive compounds shape the microbiome–immune system axis and, consequently, modulate cancer risk and treatment outcomes. Understanding how nutritional interventions can restore microbial balance and immune homeostasis offers promising avenues for innovative, personalized, and preventive oncology strategies.

Through this collection, we aim to advance the understanding of the microbiota–immunity–cancer triad and inspire novel translational approaches for cancer prevention and treatment.
