Advances in Nano-Optics and Nano-Photonics for Sensing Applications
This special issue belongs to the section "Nanophotonics Materials and Devices".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The rapid development of nano-optics and nano-photonics has fundamentally changed how we manipulate light at the sub-wavelength scale. These fields have become cornerstones of modern sensing technology, offering unprecedented sensitivity, miniaturization, and multi-functionality. By exploiting phenomena such as localized surface plasmon resonance, Mie resonance, and light–matter interactions in low-dimensional materials, researchers are developing next-generation sensors that surpass the limits of traditional optics. These clinical, environmental, and industrial sensing applications are driving the need for innovative materials, advanced nanofabrication techniques, and sophisticated physical modeling.
This Special Issue aims to present and disseminate the most recent advances related to the theory, design, fabrication, and application of nano-optical and nano-photonic sensing platforms.
Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to:
- Plasmonic and Dielectric Nanophotonics: SPR, LSPR, and high-index dielectric nanostructures for biosensing.
- Metasurfaces and Metaphotonics: Wavefront engineering, flat optics, and tunable meta-sensors.
- Surface-Enhanced Spectroscopies: Innovative substrates and mechanisms for SERS, SEIRA, and TERS.
- Two-Dimensional (2D) Materials: Sensing applications based on graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), and MXenes.
- Optical Fiber Nano-Sensors: Integration of nanostructures and functional materials onto fiber-optic tips or claddings.
- Photonic Crystals and Microcavities: High-Q-factor architectures for refractive index and single-molecule sensing.
- Quantum and Nonlinear Sensing: Utilizing quantum dots, upconversion nanoparticles, and nonlinear optical effects for detection.
- Integrated Nanophotonic Circuits: On-chip sensing systems and lab-on-a-chip technologies.
- Advanced Modeling and Machine Learning: Computational design and intelligent data processing for nano-sensors.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Nanomaterials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
