Smart Supramolecular Scaffolds: From Molecular Recognition to Biological Function
This special issue belongs to the section "Materials Chemistry".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Supramolecular scaffolds have emerged as powerful platforms for creating dynamic, adaptive, and multifunctional systems through the precise organization of molecular components via non-covalent interactions. By harnessing molecular recognition, self-assembly, host–guest chemistry, hydrogen bonding, π–π stacking interactions, and other supramolecular interactions, these scaffolds enable the construction of smart materials with tunable structures and responsive behaviors. Recent advances have expanded their applications across chemistry, materials science, biotechnology, and medicine, particularly in drug delivery, tissue engineering, biosensing, bioimaging, catalysis, and regenerative therapies.
This Special Issue aims to highlight the latest developments in the design, synthesis, characterization, and application of smart supramolecular scaffolds that bridge fundamental molecular recognition processes with biological function. We welcome original research articles, communications, and reviews covering innovative supramolecular architectures, stimuli-responsive systems, biomimetic assemblies, functional nanomaterials, and hybrid materials for biological and biomedical applications. Contributions addressing mechanistic insights, structure–function relationships and computational approaches are also encouraged.
By bringing together interdisciplinary research from chemists, materials scientists, biologists, and biomedical engineers, this Special Issue seeks to advance our understanding of how supramolecular design principles can be leveraged to create next-generation functional systems for healthcare, diagnostics, and sustainable technologies.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Molecules is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
