Next-Generation Biocatalysis in Organic Synthesis: Cascades and Hybrid Catalysis for High-Value Molecules
This special issue belongs to the section "Organic Chemistry".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue aims to showcase how next-generation biocatalysis is reshaping modern organic synthesis through strategies that combine high selectivity, step economy, and synthetic practicality. Over the last decade, advances in enzyme discovery, protein engineering, and reaction engineering have expanded the scope of biocatalytic transformations well beyond classical kinetic resolutions, enabling efficient access to stereochemically rich products and difficult bond constructions. In parallel, growing interest in multi-step cascades and hybrid catalytic platforms—where biocatalysis is integrated with organocatalysis, metal catalysis, photochemistry, or electrochemistry—has opened new opportunities to streamline synthesis, improve sustainability metrics, and unlock reactivity that is challenging for any single catalytic mode alone. The Special Issue, “Next-Generation Biocatalysis in Organic Synthesis: Cascades and Hybrid Catalysis for High-Value Molecules,” invites contributions that advance the design and implementation of enzymatic and chemoenzymatic cascades, one-pot/telescoped routes, and integrated hybrid systems for pharmaceuticals and advanced intermediates, fine chemicals, fragrances, and other high-value targets. We welcome original research and authoritative reviews covering enabling technologies such as cofactor regeneration, enzyme immobilization and stabilization, non-conventional reaction media, high substrate loading, mechanistic insights, and enzyme engineering. Submissions that demonstrate clear advantages in selectivity, robustness, productivity, scalability, or sustainability, as well as studies bridging discovery to process-relevant application, are particularly encouraged.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Molecules is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
