Enzyme Inhibition Strategies in Neurodegenerative Disorders: From Molecular Design to Therapeutic Potential

Dear Colleagues,
Neurodegenerative disorders encompass a broad and heterogeneous group of pathologies, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, among others. Although each disease is characterized by distinct pathophysiological mechanisms, they all severely impair patients’ quality of life and impose a substantial social and economic burden on society.
Despite significant advances, many of the key processes underlying the onset and progression of these disorders remain only partially understood, thereby limiting the development of effective therapeutic strategies. Nevertheless, growing evidence is elucidating the critical roles played by specific enzymes, proteins, and pathways involved in the complex molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration, offering promising avenues for therapeutic intervention.
This Special Issue is devoted to drug discovery efforts focused on the identification and development of novel compounds capable of modulating enzymes, proteins, and pathways associated with the hallmarks of neurodegenerative disorders. Repurposed drugs, as well as chemical entities employed as molecular probes to explore emerging mechanisms, are also within the scope of this issue.
Original research articles and reviews addressing these topics and reporting in vitro and/or in vivo experimental data will be considered. Submissions based on in silico approaches must be supported by experimental validation. Studies describing the biological activity of complex natural extracts without adequate chemical characterization, or without identification of the principal active constituents, will not be considered.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Molecules is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
