Nutritional and Bioactive Components of Edible Parts of Medicinal Plants—2nd Edition

Dear Colleagues,

Human health and risk of chronic diseases, including coronary heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, are strongly modulated by dietary patterns and lifestyle factors. Consequently, identifying and characterizing the health-promoting properties of dietary constituents have become a central focus of contemporary nutritional research.

Particular attention is directed toward biologically active compounds, especially plant-derived secondary metabolites, which function as intrinsic defense mechanisms against environmental stressors. From an evolutionary perspective, it may be hypothesized that humans have long benefited from these phytochemical defense systems. Advances in analytical technologies and methodological approaches now enable precise evaluation of their bioactivity and facilitate a deeper understanding of their physiological roles in human nutrition.

An optimal diet requires the inclusion of components derived from diverse sources, as each provides distinct bioactive compounds with specific and complementary effects essential for the maintenance of human health.
