Microbial Communities in Polar and High-Altitude Environments
This special issue belongs to the section "Environmental Microbiology".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
As you all know, cold environments harbor a high diversity of microorganisms, with most of them not yet described. These psychrophilic microbial communities are of the utmost importance in many scientific fields, ranging from Climate Change to Astrobiology, and recent studies have been devoted to discovering their new biotechnological applications and additional metabolites that they produce. In addition, the study of such microbial communities in cold environments is a growing field of research, with new studies being published very frequently. Thus, we invite you to contribute to a Special Issue on ‘Microbial Communities in Polar and High-Altitude Environments’ published in Microorganisms. All contributions are welcomed, as the purpose of this Special Issue is to cover all fields of research focused on cold environment microbial communities, highlighting the vast diversity of knowledge that can be obtained for its study. State-of-the-art contributions, based on topics such as AI applications in this field, newly discovered biotechnologically interesting molecules, or the implications of climate change for microorganism–animal dynamics, are especially encouraged, although other topics will be given equal consideration. Similarly, all article types will be accepted, such as original research, reviews, and descriptions of novel methodologies.
I look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Microorganisms is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
