Role of Advanced Metallic Materials Within Industry 5.0

Dear Colleagues,
When designing equipment, planning production processes, or even just implementing new ideas, it is important to consider the numerous factors that can influence how well equipment operates and its service life, reliability, and safety. This applies both to individual components and entire systems, throughout the analysis, design, and implementation stages. Therefore, understanding the principles of structural integrity and identifying causes of failure at various stages and levels play a crucial role, enabling the prediction of potential problems, development of preventive strategies, and avoidance of failures under given conditions.
With the rise of Industry 5.0—which places people at its core—it is becoming increasingly important to address all the aspects involved in the product life cycle and proactively prevent failures. Simultaneously, the properties of metallic materials also play an essential role in their application, as they must meet multi-criteria requirements that are often contradictory. Currently, the development and possibilities of metallic materials are advancing very quickly, but finding the optimal metallic material and assessing its suitability for a given purpose using various aspects (from its composition through to pre-processing and post-processing) remains a challenge. The processes and physical events that occur during the production and processing of metallic materials, as well as their behavior and the identification of their properties under various conditions and applications, fall within the scope of this Materials Special Issue.
The collection will therefore focus on topics such as:
- New types of materials (from composition to metamaterials);
- Microstructural, electron microscopy, spectral and other types of metallic material analyses;
- Metallic material processing (preparation and production);
- Multiscale analysis of metallic materials, from atoms to large structures;
- Characterization of components (samples) from non-traditional types of metallic materials using experimental testing and numerical analysis;
- Influence of conditions on the properties and behavior of metallic materials;
- Testing of the physical properties of metallic materials (unknown properties, novel materials, non-typical properties, etc.);
- Metallic materials for specific applications;
- Heat and surface treatment of metallic materials;
- Optimization, safety, damage prediction, and prevention (maintenance);
- Structural integrity, durability and reliability;
- Metallic material damage, such as cracks and crack propagation;
- Environmentally friendly metallic materials and product sustainability;
- Life cycle assessment;
- Any other relevant topics.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
