Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Flexible sensing materials and devices are enabling next-generation intelligent systems for real-time monitoring, human–machine interaction, and adaptive responses. Compared to conventional rigid sensors, flexible sensing systems offer unique advantages in conformability, lightweight construction, and integration with soft or curved surfaces, making them essential in biomedical healthcare, wearable electronics, soft robotics, and environmental monitoring. Advances in functional materials, combined with innovative structural designs and fabrication strategies, have significantly enhanced the sensitivity, stretchability, durability, and multifunctionality of flexible sensors.
This Special Issue focuses on cutting-edge research in flexible sensing materials and devices, emphasizing design, fabrication, characterization, and applications. We welcome contributions on novel sensing mechanisms, advanced manufacturing approaches, and device-level innovations.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Novel flexible sensing materials, including conductive polymers, carbon-based nanomaterials, and hybrid composites;
- Structural design and optimization for enhanced sensing performance (e.g., sensitivity, stretchability, self-healing, biocompatibility);
- Advanced fabrication techniques, including microfabrication, template-assisted methods, electrospinning, and scalable manufacturing;
- Smart materials and 4D printing—exploring stimuli-responsive materials (e.g., shape memory polymers, hydrogels, liquid crystal elastomers) and time-evolving structures for adaptive, programmable, or self-regulated sensing;
- Flexible sensing devices for biomedical and healthcare applications, including wearable monitors, implantable sensors, electronic skin, and soft robotic interfaces;
- Integrated flexible sensing systems with signal acquisition, processing, and wireless communication for intelligent monitoring and human–machine interaction.
We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
