From Sea to Substance: Preparation and Application of Marine-Derived Materials

Dear Colleagues,

Marine ecosystems are a vast and largely unexplored source of bioactive compounds, structural polymers, and functional materials. Marine biodiversity provides molecules with remarkable chemical diversity, ranging from small bioactive metabolites to large biomacromolecules such as proteins and polysaccharides, with applications in medicine, cosmetics, cell therapy, and tissue engineering. Marine polymers, in particular, are promising sustainable alternatives to synthetic materials, enabling the development of eco-friendly bioplastics and biocomposites. The exploration and utilization of these resources, commonly referred to as “blue biotechnology”, is a rapidly expanding field with significant implications for the sustainable use of oceanic biological resources. This Special Issue, entitled “From Sea to Substance: Preparation and Application of Marine-Derived Materials”, highlights advances in the extraction, processing, and application of marine-derived materials, demonstrating how marine resources can be transformed into high-value substances and fostering interdisciplinary approaches for their sustainable and responsible exploitation.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
