Advanced Coatings and Films for Corrosion Resistance and Surface Engineering of Light Metal Alloys

Dear Colleagues,

Light metals, including aluminum and magnesium and their respective alloys, exhibit superior mechanical properties such as high specific strength and good ductility. Consequently, they are anticipated to serve as structural materials for transportation components, contributing to the mitigation of CO₂ emissions.

However, their inherent low corrosion resistance significantly restricts their widespread application, particularly in corrosive environments. To date, various surface treatments, such as anodization and chemical conversion coating, have been developed. Nevertheless, substantial scope for improvement remains.

Therefore, there is a compelling need for novel corrosion protection or coating technologies capable of significantly enhancing the corrosion resistance of these light metals.

Achieving effective corrosion protection hinges on the uniform formation of a film and its high chemical stability within corrosive media. This can often be realized through surface pre-treatment or modification of the substrate's microstructure. Thus, this Special Issue focuses not only on novel corrosion protection and coating technologies to improve the corrosion resistance of light metals, but also on the underlying corrosion mechanisms responsible for this improvement, particularly considering the effects of surface pre-treatment and substrate microstructure modification.
