Surface and Interface Functionalization: Advancements in Coatings, Modification, and Restoration
This special issue belongs to the section "Thin Films and Interfaces".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue focuses on the frontiers of surface and interface science related to functional coatings, surface modification, and surface reconditioning/repair, targeting applications in aerospace, energy storage, and biomedical fields. Submissions may address surface and interface failure mechanisms, and novel strategies to enhance oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and electrical performance. We welcome original research and reviews on topics including thermal/environmental barrier coatings, anti-icing surfaces, electrode interface optimization, bioactive coatings, self-healing and remanufacturing surfaces. Contributions employing multiscale modeling and in-situ characterization to reveal interfacial evolution and multi-field coupling failure under extreme conditions are encouraged, with emphasis on service behavior. This issue also highlights surface restoration and life-extension technologies, accepting manuscripts on advanced surface modification methods, interfacial bonding strength assessment, and life prediction models. The aim is to promote interdisciplinary integration and drive surface and interface technology from passive protection toward self-healing and intelligence, providing an interface science foundation for the long-life and reliable service of high-end equipment and devices.
Original research articles and reviews are welcome for this Special Issue. Areas of research may include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Functional coatings for extreme environments
- Surface modification and processing techniques
- Surface restoration, repair, and remanufacturing for extended service life
- Failure mechanisms of surfaces and interfaces: oxidation, corrosion, wear, erosion, and interfacial degradation
- Electrically insulating and conductive surfaces/interfaces
- Corrosion-, oxidation-, and wear-resistant surfaces and coatings for aerospace, energy, and biomedical systems
- Biofunctional surfaces and coatings for medical implants and devices
- Interfaces and surface engineering in energy storage and conversion

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
