The Oral-Systemic Link in Chronic Mucosal Diseases

This special issue belongs to the section “Medical Research“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Oral medicine, a field that connects medicine and dentistry, is more widely accessible worldwide. There is a bidirectional link between chronic oral mucosal diseases and general conditions. Oral mucosal diseases such as oral lichen planus, candidiasis, leukoplakia and burning mouth syndrome impair patients, affecting function and psychological well-being, underscoring the importance of comprehensive care.

The evolution of oral diseases is influenced by general conditions such as diabetes, chronic hepatitis, hypertension, different types of anemia, autoimmune diseases, psychiatric disorders and malignancies that are either diagnosed and treated or not. An imbalanced general condition may be a triggering or exacerbating factor for the oral condition. Chronic oral diseases exhibit periods of aggravation and partial remission that affect patients' lives for extended periods and necessitate personalized prophylactic measures. Recent advances in technology, biomarkers, diagnostic criteria and novel personalized treatment options improve the quality of care and the quality of life in patients.

Contributions for this Special Issue will focus on current research and clinical studies linking chronic oral diseases to general diseases to improve the understanding of this connection.
