Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The next generation of biosensors, catalysts, biomimetic interfaces, and optoelectronic devices will be shaped by the molecularly controlled design of nanocomposites—dynamic systems in which two or more nanomaterials are integrated to synergistically meet the demands of cutting-edge applications. When graphene serves as a core component, the resulting graphene-based nanocomposites (Gr-NCs) harness its extraordinary electrical conductivity, optical transparency, and mechanical strength, unlocking transformative possibilities across a wide range of technologies. Importantly, the molecular structure of the additional components within Gr-NCs can endow the composites with critical functionalities—such as bio/chemo-selectivity, tunable optical properties, and catalytic activity—while also providing new opportunities to refine fabrication and processing strategies.
This Special Issue invites exciting contributions that offer molecular-level insights into the rational design of graphene-based nanocomposites. Here, Gr-NCs are considered in the broadest sense—not limited to graphite intercalates but embracing a rich diversity of systems. We believe that breakthroughs in high-performance heterostructures and custom-designed biomimetic interfaces will be driven by a deeper understanding of the molecular structure–property relationships at graphene-based interfaces, including the following:
0D: Small-molecule adsorbates, nanoparticles, protein assemblies, etc.;
1D: (Bio)organic polymers, inorganic nanotubes, nanorods, and related structures;
2D: Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), metal halides, and MXenes, among others.
