Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue, "Advances in Plant Breeding and Biotechnology: From Lab to Field", showcases cutting-edge research and innovative methodologies driving the advancement of plant science. It underscores how modern plant breeding, augmented by transformative biotechnologies, is being strategically applied to enhance crop resilience, productivity, and sustainability across diverse agricultural systems. Key focus areas include the integration of machine learning into breeding programs, plant transformation techniques, genome editing for trait optimization, metabolic engineering, molecular mechanisms underlying stress tolerance, and the application of omics technologies in breeding pipelines. We welcome high-quality original research articles and comprehensive review papers that highlight recent scientific breakthroughs and outline future trajectories in the field of plant breeding and biotechnology.

Plant biotechnology and modern plant breeding are jointly revolutionizing agriculture and environmental sustainability. By leveraging genetic, molecular, and cellular technologies, these disciplines address critical global challenges, including climate change, food security, and the growing scarcity of natural resources. Recent technological advancements—such as machine learning-driven breeding optimization, high-throughput phenotyping, genome editing, synthetic biology, and multi-omics platforms—are significantly accelerating the development of crops with superior agronomic performance, enhanced tolerance to abiotic and biotic stresses, and novel capacities for bioproduct synthesis. This Special Issue invites high-quality original research articles and comprehensive review papers that focus on emerging technologies bridging innovative breeding strategies with real-world agricultural applications. We particularly encourage submissions that illustrate how laboratory-based advances in plant biotechnology and breeding can be effectively translated into resilient, productive, and sustainable farming systems.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Data-driven plant breeding;
  • Climate-resilient crops;
  • Precision crop engineering;
  • Metabolic pathway engineering;
  • Stress resilience mechanisms;
  • Recent advances in molecular plant breeding;
  • Crop genetic breeding based on multi-omics approach.

I look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
