Azoles and Fused Heterocycles in Antimicrobial Drug Discovery: Synthesis, Mechanisms, and Applications
This special issue belongs to the section "Molecular Pharmacology".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Heterocyclic compounds constitute one of the most fundamental and versatile classes of molecules in medicinal chemistry, forming the structural backbone of a vast proportion of approved antimicrobial drugs and bioactive agents. Their unique electronic, steric, and physicochemical properties enable precise interactions with biological targets, making them indispensable in the design of therapeutics across diverse disease areas, including infectious diseases. Advances in synthetic methodologies, mechanistic understanding, and structure–activity relationship (SAR) studies have significantly expanded the chemical space of heterocycles, while emerging technologies such as green chemistry, catalysis, and computational modeling continue to accelerate innovation in this field.
This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive platform for high-quality research and review articles that explore the design, synthesis, functionalization, and biological evaluation of azoles and fused heterocyclic compounds with antimicrobial potential. Contributions that address novel synthetic strategies, reaction mechanisms, and catalytic approaches, as well as studies elucidating molecular mechanisms of action, target identification, and pharmacological profiling, are welcome. Interdisciplinary works integrating medicinal chemistry with computational chemistry, chemical biology, and drug delivery are particularly encouraged. The issue seeks to highlight both fundamental advances and translational research that bridge chemistry and medicine, ultimately contributing to the discovery and optimization of next-generation therapeutic agents.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
