Advanced Drug Delivery Systems: From Nanocarrier Design to Translation Application
This special issue belongs to the section "Molecular Nanoscience".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Advanced drug delivery systems (ADDSs) aim to overcome the limitations of traditional drug delivery methods while improving the likelihood of successful translation from the laboratory to the clinic. Over the last decade, various platforms such as liposomes, lipid nanoparticles (LNPs), polymer nanoparticles, and dendrimers have emerged as promising ADDSs. Since the FDA approved Doxil in 1995, several formulations have been developed and tested in clinical trials.
LNPs and liposomes have primarily been used as advanced platforms for mRNA vaccination and siRNA therapies, as well as for surface modifications that enable targeted delivery. Biodegradable polymeric drug carriers, like pegylated nanoparticles, have shown great effectiveness in delivering drug combinations.
Despite the significant progress made with nanocarriers, challenges remain in areas such as mononuclear phagocyte system (MPS) clearance, scalability, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics—all of which must be addressed before clinical translation can occur. Additionally, immunogenicity and targetability are crucial factors to consider in the formulation of nanocarriers for efficient drug delivery and for ensuring successful clinical translation.
In this Special Issue, we aim to compile strategies and formulations considered for nanocarrier development that have improved prospects for clinical translation. We hope that this collection will bridge existing knowledge gaps and advance nanocarrier development, with the aim of facilitating the creation of effective nano delivery systems with enhanced outcomes.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
