Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The Special Issue titled “Biofunctional Coatings for Medical Applications” is a pivotal exploration into the transformative role of biofunctional coatings in contemporary medical practice. With a keen focus on the intersection of materials science and medicine, this Special Issue aims to reconfigure the frontiers of knowledge by showcasing state-of-the-art advances in (bio)materials, thin film deposition techniques, and practical applications.
In the ever-evolving landscape of medical technology, biofunctional coatings have emerged as critical components, influencing the performance and biocompatibility of medical devices. This Special Issue is designed to provide a comprehensive platform for researchers, engineers, and professionals to contribute cutting-edge reviews and scientific papers. Submissions that delve into the latest (bio)materials, deposition techniques, and emerging technologies, particularly emphasizing the impact of last-generation deposition methods, are therefore welcome. The contributions included within this volume are intended to cover a broad spectrum of topics, starting with innovative thin film deposition techniques. The authors will therefore discuss state-of-the-art methods from chemical vapor deposition to advanced sol–gel techniques, highlighting the advantages and limitations of each. Emerging technologies, such as plasma-assisted deposition and self-diffusion techniques, will be also explored, opening new horizons for surface engineering in the medical field.
Moreover, this Special Issue aims also to unravel the significant benefits that materials’ doping and co-doping bring to the medical field, thereby opening new perspectives for biofunctional coatings. Tissue engineering, orthopedics, and dentistry are just a few of the areas covered, providing an overview of the diverse contributions made by these technologies in improving the quality of patients' lives. It is therefore anticipated that this collection will not only deepen our understanding of biofunctional coatings but also pave the way for groundbreaking developments in medical applications.
We welcome your valuable contributions to make this Special Issue an influential resource in advancing the realm of biofunctional coatings in medical applications. Please refer to our submission guidelines for details on manuscript preparation and submission.
Thank you for considering the invitation to participate in this important project.
Warm regards,
Dr. Liviu Duta

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
