Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The usage of various mobile devices has been increasing dramatically every year, and will continue to grow in the years that follow. This will lead to the rise of new application domains in network-connected mobile devices. This domain should be intelligent and be able to process intelligent information from all entities in the system. It could be characterized as an embedded platform in an intelligent environment.

The idea of “Smart Solutions” lies in the need for proactive solutions, which can improve the lives of users that are digitally connected with each other and also around them. The impact of such Smart Solutions can be found in improved interactions between users and systems through their mobile devices. Such interconnection can be seen in the reaction to user's non-declared requests. These requests include, namely, user current positions, user future-predicted positions, their movements, and tracking. By combining these requests (in conjunction with other sources of user knowledge and behavior), intelligent information (which are processed by the sophisticated information system) is generated. These tasks are implemented during the development of intelligent systems to be “smart”. Such developed systems can be widely implemented in Mobile Information Systems as an important part of user request processing, position tracking, user behavior, etc.

Modern sophisticated services deliver content to users according to their actual position. Personalization of these services is very important for providing non-redundant data. These services could be also called intelligent or “Smart Services”. On the other hand, the success of services consists also in the performance of data processing, where the new potentials of multicore CPUs and multiprocessing are growing.

Another aspect of the development of new system solutions or mobile applications, which need to be considered in addition to sophisticated software solution is the usefulness of such solutions before the development phase and consequent sustainability during the operation phase. There are many project calls from the European Union for the various needs of a future elderly population with a connection to Net-Living, which also need to be evaluated as a part of new software solution development.

Research topics (with aspects of usefulness and sustainability):

  • Innovative architecture and infrastructure of smart systems for algorithm and method implementation in smart systems
  • Advanced computational techniques of smart systems
  • User-centric adaptivity in smart systems
  • Location-based services supporting smart solutions
  • Smart solutions using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in smart systems
  • Smart solution in processing data from smart sensors as a part of a smart environment
  • Smart systems in context of smart cities as a solution to demographical degradation of the European Union/elderly populations around the world

Any other topics strongly related to smart solutions, smart approaches and smart systems in context of usefullness and sustainability are also welcome. Please directly contact the Special Issue editors to confirm the suitability of your paper’s topic.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Future Internet is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1000 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
