Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) have rapidly evolved into transformative technologies with profound impacts across academia, industry, and society. From natural language processing and computer vision to autonomous systems, intelligent healthcare, and smart cities, the applications of AI and ML continue to expand at an unprecedented pace. Alongside these advances, new challenges emerge, including issues of scalability, interpretability, fairness, security, and ethical deployment.

This Special Issue of Future Internet, titled “Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Applications: Progress, Trends and Directions”, aims to provide a platform for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to share their latest findings and perspectives. We welcome contributions that explore innovative algorithms, practical implementations, and emerging application domains of AI and ML. Submissions addressing cross-cutting topics—such as responsible AI, sustainable computing, human-centered design, and integration with the Internet of Things (IoT) and edge/cloud computing—are particularly welcome.

By gathering cutting-edge research and critical insights, this Special Issue seeks to highlight both the opportunities and challenges of AI/ML applications, while identifying promising future directions. Our goal is to foster dialog that bridges theory and practice, enabling AI and ML to shape a more intelligent, trustworthy, and inclusive digital future to support the evolution of the future internet ecosystem.

Topics of Interest
The Special Issue welcomes, but is not limited to, the following themes:

  • Novel AI and ML algorithms, frameworks, and architectures;
  • Deep learning, reinforcement learning, and hybrid approaches;
  • Explainable, interpretable, and trustworthy AI methods;
  • Fairness, accountability, and ethics in AI/ML applications;
  • AI/ML for Internet of Things (IoT), edge, and cloud environments;
  • Intelligent systems for smart cities, healthcare, transportation, and education;
  • AI-driven cybersecurity, privacy protection, and threat detection;
  • Natural language processing and human–computer interaction;
  • Computer vision and multimodal learning applications;
  • Scalable and energy-efficient machine learning techniques;
  • Human-centered AI design and collaborative intelligence;
  • Emerging trends: generative AI, foundation models, and automated ML;
  • Cross-disciplinary applications of AI/ML in science, engineering, and social domains.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Future Internet is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
