Dear Colleagues,
Wood modification technologies and the characterization of modified wood is a rapidly evolving research field driven by the growing demand for sustainable, high-performance, and environmentally responsible materials. Traditionally, wood has been widely used in construction, furniture, and engineering applications; however, its natural susceptibility to moisture, biological degradation, dimensional instability, and weathering has stimulated the development of various modification technologies. Over the recent decades, significant progress has been achieved through thermal, chemical, biological, and physical modification processes that enhance wood durability, stability, mechanical performance, and functionality while reducing reliance on conventional preservative treatments. This Special Issue aims to provide a platform for the dissemination of the latest advances in wood modification technologies and the characterization of modified wood, covering both fundamental research and industrial applications. Particular attention will be given to innovative treatment methods, environmentally friendly and bio-based solutions, nanotechnology applications, wood densification, functionalized wood materials, durability assessment, and advanced analytical techniques for evaluating structure–property relationships. We welcome original research articles, review papers, short communications, and case studies that address modification processes, material characterization, performance evaluation, service-life prediction, sustainability assessment, and emerging digital approaches such as modeling, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Interdisciplinary contributions bridging wood science, materials engineering, chemistry, and sustainable technologies are especially encouraged.

Manuscript Submission Information

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Forests is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
