Biotechnology for Smarter Industrial Fermentation
This special issue belongs to the section "Industrial Fermentation".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Industrial fermentation plays a fundamental role in industrial biotechnology and represents a key focus of Fermentation. Recent advances in biotechnology, microbial engineering, and bioprocess design are driving the development of smarter, more efficient, and more sustainable fermentation processes for a wide range of applications, including food and feed production, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and bio-based materials.
This Special Issue, “Biotechnology for Smarter Industrial Fermentation”, invites researchers to submit original research articles and review papers addressing innovative biotechnological strategies aimed at improving industrial fermentation. The Special Issue seeks to highlight novel approaches that enhance process performance, robustness, scalability, and sustainability.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Microbial strain development and engineering;
- Metabolic engineering, systems biology, and synthetic biology;
- Adaptive laboratory evolution and microbial robustness;
- Precision fermentation and non-conventional microbial hosts;
- Mixed cultures and co-culture fermentation systems;
- Fermentation monitoring, modeling, and control;
- Bioprocess optimization, intensification, and scale-up;
- Omics and data-driven approaches in fermentation processes;
- Sustainable fermentation strategies, including alternative substrates and waste valorization;
- Circular bioeconomy and reduction of environmental impact.
Both experimental and theoretical studies are welcome. Case studies demonstrating industrial relevance, scale-up, or techno-economic and sustainability assessments are particularly encouraged.
This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of current challenges and emerging solutions in industrial fermentation, fostering scientific exchange and supporting the advancement of smarter and more sustainable biotechnological processes.
I look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Fermentation is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2100 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
