Diagnostic Advances in Orthodontics and Dentistry
This special issue belongs to the section "Clinical Diagnosis and Prognosis".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Ongoing advances in dental technologies continue to reshape conventional clinical workflows, particularly in the areas of diagnosis and treatment planning. The integration of digital and automated solutions has opened new perspectives for precision-driven, patient-centered care in orthodontics and oro-facial rehabilitation. This Special Issue aims to provide an updated overview of cutting-edge technological developments and their clinical applications, with a focus on both in vivo and ex vivo investigations.
A specific emphasis is placed on artificial intelligence-based technologies and data-driven tools designed to support clinical decision-making. Machine learning and deep learning applications are increasingly employed for image analysis and segmentation, automated cephalometric landmark detection, growth and treatment outcome prediction, optimization of orthodontic biomechanics, aligner staging, and risk assessment for treatment-related complications. AI-powered systems also contribute to workflow optimization, reducing operator dependency and improving efficiency and reproducibility across diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
Contributions addressing innovative diagnostic tools and treatment planning strategies are welcome, including but not limited to digital acquisition systems, CAD/CAM workflows, robotics, intraoral and facial scanning technologies, and advanced radiological imaging. Particular interest is given to approaches that integrate AI with multimodal data sources, such as CBCT, facial scans, intraoral scans, and clinical records, to enhance functional outcomes, esthetic rehabilitation, and personalized treatment planning.
Original research articles presenting novel methodologies, technological integrations, and clinically relevant outcomes will be given priority. Comprehensive reviews, systematic analyses, and conceptual or methodological frameworks related to emerging technologies, digital dentistry, and AI-driven orthodontics are also strongly encouraged. This Special Issue aims to stimulate interdisciplinary dialogue and foster the translation of technological innovation into everyday clinical practice.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Diagnostics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
