Advances in Digital Pathology, Artificial Intelligence and Pixelomics
This special issue belongs to the section "Pathology and Molecular Diagnostics".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Digital pathology is transforming modern diagnostic practice by converting tissue morphology into quantitative, computable data. In parallel, rapid advances in artificial intelligence, computational pathology and multimodal analytics are enabling the extraction of clinically meaningful information from histological images beyond conventional visual assessment. This Special Issue, “Advances in Digital Pathology, Artificial Intelligence and Pixelomics,” will highlight innovative research spanning the development, validation, implementation and clinical translation of these technologies.
We welcome original research articles, reviews, technical reports and perspective papers addressing artificial intelligence and machine learning applications in pathology, including image classification, segmentation, detection, prognostication, biomarker prediction and treatment-response modelling. Emphasis will be placed on pixelomics defined as the systematic extraction and integration of high-dimensional information from tissue images to reveal morphological, spatial, molecular and prognostic signatures.
Relevant topics also include foundation models, vision transformers, multimodal learning, computational biomarkers, virtual staining, spatial tissue analysis, digital pathology workflows, quality assurance, explainable AI, model generalisability, validation, regulatory considerations and responsible clinical implementation. Studies integrating histopathology with genomics, radiology, clinical data or other omics platforms are strongly encouraged.
This Special Issue aims to bring together pathologists, clinicians, data scientists, engineers and industry partners to advance reproducible, interpretable and clinically useful computational pathology solutions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Diagnostics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
