Medical Imaging in Diagnosis, Prevention and Rehabilitation of Musculoskeletal Injuries, Second Edition

Dear Colleagues,

Musculoskeletal injuries can occur due to acute trauma or repetitive stress, causing damage to the skeletal muscle, tendon, ligament, fascia and bone tissue; these conditions constitute the primary reason for rehabilitation across the world. Although recent advances in the prevention and management of musculoskeletal injuries have significantly reduced their incidence and improved the outcome of musculoskeletal rehabilitation, the World Health Organization launched the Rehabilitation 2030 initiative, indicating the profound unmet need for advancements in the diagnosis, prevention and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries.

Medical imaging, such as magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography and elastographic ultrasound, is widely used in assessing neurological impairment and assisting orthopedic surgery to provide individualized treatment. However, it is underutilized, particularly in the prevention and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries. Current rehabilitative interventions often overlook the value of conducting precision assessments using medical imaging to better understand the pathophysiological progression and remodeling of the musculoskeletal system, helping to address the requirements in diagnosing and rehabilitating injuries. This Special Issue aims to bring together clinicians and researchers to explore the use of medical imaging to improve clinical practice in the diagnosis, prevention and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal impairment and optimize athlete training and prevent injuries. All topics on the application of medical imaging in musculoskeletal impairment are welcome.
