Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Protective coatings play a pivotal role in extending the service life of materials and engineering components operating in aggressive environments, such as high temperatures, corrosive gases, molten salts, or humid atmospheres. In particular, the development of advanced oxidation and corrosion-resistant coatings is essential for applications in aerospace, energy, marine, power generation, and chemical processing industries, where materials are exposed to synergistic thermal, chemical, and mechanical degradation. The performance and reliability of these coatings are determined not only by their initial composition and microstructures, but also by their evolution under complex operating conditions.

This Special Issue aims to present recent advances in the design, fabrication, characterization, and performance assessment of protective coatings with enhanced oxidation and corrosion resistance. We welcome the submission of original research and comprehensive reviews that deepen our understanding of coating–environment interactions, degradation mechanisms, and failure processes under service-relevant conditions. In addition to mechanistic studies, this Special Issue also seeks contributions regarding the optimization of coating compositions, process innovation, and multilayer or functionally graded coating systems that improve their oxidation and corrosion resistance.

The scope of this Special Issue includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:

  1. The development and processing of advanced oxidation and corrosion resistance coatings;
  2. High-temperature oxidation and corrosion behavior of coatings in various environments;
  3. Corrosion mechanisms of coatings in aqueous, marine, or chemically aggressive media;
  4. Microstructural evolution and degradation mechanisms of coatings under high temperatures;
  5. Coating/substrate interface reactions and interdiffusion phenomena;
  6. Failure analysis of protective coatings under thermal or mechanical stresses;
  7. Novel alloying strategies and composition design for enhanced oxidation and corrosion resistance;
  8. Advanced surface engineering techniques and coating architectures;
  9. Computational and multiscale modelling of oxidation and corrosion processes under high temperatures.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
