Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue is related to the international conference ‘Coatings 2026: Safe and Sustainable by Design Surface Treatment and Coatings’, to be held on 20–22 April 2026 in Athens, Greece (https://sciforum.net/event/Coatings2026).

This conference aims to bring together researchers, industry professionals, and experts from around the world to share their latest advancements, exchange ideas, and foster collaborations in the field of surface finishing.

The surface finishing industry faces growing challenges, including stricter environmental regulations such as REACH and the EU Green Deal, increasing demands for pollution control, and the need to adopt cleaner, more sustainable technologies. Balancing high performance with reduced environmental impacts calls for a transition toward circular economy practices, smarter formulation and production tools, and the use of less toxic, bio-based materials. By joining forces across research, policy, and supply chains, we can create coatings that meet tomorrow’s standards while protecting our planet.

The conference will cover a wide range of topics including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Advances in metallic and metal matrix composite coatings;
  • Advances in organic and hybrid coatings;
  • Advances in methods and equipment;
  • Surface finishing for additive manufacturing;
  • Application of the SSbD framework on the surface finishing industry;
  • Advances in thermal spraying;
  • Thin film technologies and applications;
  • Anodizing light alloys;
  • AI tools and simulations;
  • Phasing out substances of concern from the surface finishing industry.

Conference participants, as well as researchers working in the field, are invited to contribute their original research papers or reviews to this Special Issue of Coatings.

You may choose our Joint Special Issue in Nanomaterials.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
