Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to invite you to contribute to a Special Issue of Coatings entitled “Powder Metallurgy of Advanced Materials and Additive Manufacturing-Based Coating Applications”. The aim of this Special Issue is to highlight recent advances and interdisciplinary approaches in materials processing, design, and performance evaluation driven by powder metallurgy and additive manufacturing technologies.
As the demand for advanced functional materials grows across industries such as aerospace, automotive, energy, and biomedical, novel methods in powder metallurgy and additive manufacturing (AM) offer unprecedented control over material structure and properties. This Special Issue seeks to explore innovations that span the fundamental to the applied, from material synthesis to predictive modeling and in-service performance of coatings and components.
We welcome original research articles, comprehensive reviews, and short communications on the following topics (but not limited to):
- Innovation in Powder Metallurgy for Advanced Materials and Additive Manufacturing
- Novel powder production techniques, consolidation processes, and alloy development tailored for AM platforms and advanced material applications.
- Process and Development of Novel Coatings Utilizing Additive Manufacturing
- Integration of AM methods such as cold spray, directed energy deposition, or binder jetting for protective and functional coatings.
- Relationship between Structure, Process, and Properties Based on Powder Metallurgy and Additive Manufacturing
- Microstructure-property correlations driven by process parameters and post-processing treatments.
- Modeling, Simulation, and Experimental Design Using CALPHAD and Density Functional Theory (DFT)
- Multi-scale simulations, phase diagram calculations, and thermodynamic modeling to accelerate material and process design.
- Characterization and Performance Evaluation of the Manufacturing Process
- Advanced characterization tools and techniques for assessing mechanical, thermal, and corrosion performance of processed materials and coatings.
This Special Issue provides a platform to share cutting-edge research and foster collaboration between scientists and engineers working in materials processing, design, and performance assessment. All submissions will undergo rigorous peer review to ensure high scientific quality and impact.
We look forward to your valuable contributions.
Sincerely,
Dr. Sayan Sarkar

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
