Advanced Functional Coatings for Dental Implants and Periodontal Regeneration
This special issue belongs to the section "Bioactive Coatings and Biointerfaces".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The long-term success of dental implants and periodontal regeneration therapies rely heavily on the establishment of a stable interface between the biomaterial and the host tissues. This involves a complex biological cascade, requiring not only rapid and durable osseointegration but also the formation of a biological seal by soft tissues to prevent bacterial invasion. Simultaneously, in the field of periodontology, the regeneration of multi-tissue complexes (cementum, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone) remains a significant challenge that demands advanced material solutions.
This Special Issue, “Advanced Functional Coatings for Dental Implants and Periodontal Regeneration”, aims to gather cutting-edge research on how surface engineering can optimize the clinical performance of dental biomaterials. We invite submissions of original research and review articles focusing on novel coating technologies and surface treatments that enhance tissue integration and regeneration.
We are particularly interested in strategies that address the “dual-function” of implant surfaces: promoting bone formation while ensuring effective soft tissue attachment at the transmucosal collar. Additionally, we welcome studies on functionalized barrier membranes and scaffolds designed to guide the regeneration of periodontal defects. Research exploring the physicochemical interactions (e.g., topography, wettability, chemical composition) between modified surfaces and specific cell types—such as osteoblasts, gingival fibroblasts, and periodontal ligament cells—is highly encouraged.
The scope of this Special Issue includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:
- Surface modifications of dental implants to enhance osseointegration and stability.
- Coatings and surface treatments for improving soft tissue sealing and mucosal integration.
- Functional coatings for barrier membranes in Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) and Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR).
- Bioactive surfaces for periodontal multi-tissue regeneration.
- Antibacterial coatings to prevent peri-implantitis and periodontitis.
- Biomechanical and biological evaluation of novel implant surfaces and regenerative materials.
We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
