Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Additive manufacturing provides a revolutionary solution for the customization of the surface characteristics of complex parts through the unique advantages of layer-by-layer construction and precise control.

Combined with material science, process optimization and multi-scale modeling technology, additive manufacturing can realize the active design of surface morphology, composition and function, thus significantly improving the wear resistance, corrosion resistance, thermodynamic performance and biocompatibility of parts in extreme environments.

The development of this field is driven by the urgent requirements of high-value-added industries such as those involving aerospace, energy equipment, biomedicine, etc., and also lays the foundation for cutting-edge directions such as smart surfaces and gradient functional materials.

This Special Issue will focus on the following research directions, aiming to promote the theoretical innovation and technological transformation of additive manufacturing surface characteristics:

  1. Theoretical and experimental research on surface morphology and performance enhancement and the corresponding latest insights.
  2. The development of different processes acting on the surface of materials including but not limited to ultrasonic-assisted machining, electrolytic-assisted machining, laser-assisted machining, etc.
  3. The latest progress in research on the surface properties of different materials.
  4. Recent advancements in the study of the influence of additive manufacturing surface characteristics and performance indicators.
  5. Computer modeling and simulation in order to predict surface characteristics, performance, durability and reliability in service environments.
  6. Future research directions such as ultra-precision surface treatment, integrated on-line detection, and micro-to-macro-surface cross-scale correlation mechanisms.
  7. The digital combination of material surface characteristics and intelligent optimization of processing equipment during processing.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
