Managing Soil Contaminants for Safe and Sustainable Crop Production
This special issue belongs to the section "Soil and Plant Nutrition".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Soil pollution remains a global environmental challenge, driven primarily by industrial activities, agricultural chemical use, urbanization, and improper waste disposal. In addition to traditional heavy metals and metalloids (e.g., As, Cd, Hg, and Cr) and organic pollutants (e.g., insecticides, herbicides, and persistent organic pollutants), emerging contaminants such as nanomaterials, microplastics, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are attracting increasing scientific attention. To ensure crop safety and protect human health, soil management is rapidly evolving toward risk-based classification, low-carbon remediation, and system integration. Key strategies include nutrient improvement, the cultivation of low-accumulation crop varieties, regulation of the rhizosphere microbiome, and the application of novel amendments such as biochar and nanomaterials. These approaches aim to markedly reduce the bioavailability of pollutants, restore soil functionality, and enable safe agricultural production. This Special Issue invites original research articles that address the remediation of soil pollutants in farmland and the safe production of crops in contaminated soils, with a focus on theoretical innovations, technological breakthroughs, and the scalable promotion and application of remediation technologies. We particularly welcome studies that integrate risk assessment frameworks with agronomic management and remediation technologies, as well as those exploring low-carbon remediation strategies.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Agronomy is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
