Cover Story: Fungal endophytes have been studied for decades, but few studies have documented the process by which these fungi colonize their plant hosts. In vitro and in vivo experiments were conducted to observe the early stages of endophyte colonization in leaves of Populus trichocarpa (black cottonwood). This scanning electron micrograph shows a germinated conidium of Trichoderma sp., with its hypha entering a stoma 3 days after inoculation. Visualizing the process of leaf colonization contributes to a growing understanding of the ecology and evolution of fungal endophytes, some of the most diverse and common symbionts of plants worldwide.
