Cover Story: Intact female dogs are at increased risk for reproductive disorders including mammary tumors, but the prevalence and associated mortality of such disorders are not well known in intact females. This retrospective study evaluated a population of 599 client-owned female dogs born in 2000–2003, of which 293 were followed up until death. In this cohort, early sterilization (performed before 2 years of age) was uncommon (8%), and 306 female dogs were intact (51%). Age at death was significantly younger in intact females (12 ± 3 years) than early-spayed (13 ± 2 years) and late-spayed (13 ± 3 years) female dogs. Reproductive disorders were the cause of death in 23% of the dogs. Mammary tumors occurred in 35% of the female dogs during their lifetime and caused death in 52% of them. View this paper
