Cover Story: Mammary carcinoma is a highly frequent tumor in felines. Here, a case of a queen diagnosed with a right inguinal mammary mass is presented where a cytological study revealed an epithelial malignant tumor. Due to the rapid decline of the animal's health, euthanasia was performed. At necropsy, the tumor and organs with metastatic nodules were collected. Histology of the primary tumor showed large pleomorphic epithelial cells, often grouped in small clusters presenting bizarre chromatin-rich nuclei. Immunohistochemistry of both the primary tumor and regional metastasis showed tumor cells that were negative for estrogen receptor alpha and positive for progesterone receptor, HER-2, and pan-cytokeratin. This is the first report to describe clinical, pathological, and immunohistochemical findings relative to an anaplastic mammary carcinoma in a female cat. View this paper.
