Cover Story: Avian influenza viruses have demonstrated their pandemic potential by infecting humans. This study investigated the utility of influenza virus nucleoprotein (NP) and an autophagy-inducing peptide called C5 (AIP-C5) in developing a universal influenza vaccine for pandemic preparedness. Our findings reveal that the adenovirus vector carrying the influenza NP and AIP-C5 [HAd-C5-NP(H7N9)] elicits an enhanced cell-mediated immune response and confers broad protection against influenza A viruses. Notably, this vaccine vector affords protection against both seasonal and avian influenza A viruses in mice. View this paper
