Cover Story: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is an effective method of renal replacement therapy providing a high level of patient autonomy. However, the application of PD is limited due to permanent exposure of human peritoneal mesothelial cells in the peritoneal membrane to glucose-based PD fluids (PDF) and glucose degradation products. Therefore, long-term PD is associated with peritoneal membrane changes such as peritoneal fibrosis and, at worst, complications such as encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS), eventually leading to ultrafiltration or method failure. The aim of the study is to elucidate pathophysiological mechanisms leading to changes in the peritoneal membrane in order to develop putative drug therapies delaying functional deterioration and therefore improving peritoneal membrane function.
