Cover Story: ‘Farm Animal Welfare’ is the first digital game to teach children about the welfare of farm animals. Children’s understanding of farm animal welfare is low in the UK, and this ‘serious’ game was developed to fill this knowledge gap. The game, based on psychology and digital learning theory, focuses on cows and chickens and incorporates images, sounds and interactive functionality. It is structured into three levels to enhance children’s: (1) ability to recognise animal emotions and increase belief in the animal mind, (2) understand animal welfare needs and (3) appreciate the welfare implications of production systems. A controlled trial showed that ‘Farm Animal Welfare’ increased children’s beliefs in farm animal minds, knowledge of welfare needs and understanding of production systems. Digital technology offers exciting opportunities to develop effective means of animal welfare education for children. View this paper
