Cover Story: The Yellow River Delta is one of the largest deltaic systems on Earth. The harsh hydrological environment causes soil salinization which hinders agriculture development in this coastal area of East China. Nitrogen fertilizer, particularly urea, has been used to improve salt-affected soil fertility for thirty years in China. Excess fertilization application may lead to secondary salinization, water contamination, and nutritional imbalance. Reasonable control of fertilizer application can not only increase crop yield but also reduce environmental pollution. In our study, the nitrogen content of wheat shoots and roots was mainly affected by N addition usage, and the 270 kg/ha N addition treatment was the optimal usage. Rational nitrogen fertilizer application is useful for saving resources and protecting the coastal ecological environment.
