Cover Story: Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is a common and incurable infection in domestic cats and a model for HIV in humans, with both causing oral dysbiosis. In this study, we carried out a longitudinal assessment of oral health. The composition of the oral microbiome of domestic cats was experimentally exposed to FIV and treated with combination antiretroviral therapy (cART). Oral examinations were performed, and gingival biopsies were collected for 16S rRNA sequencing over an 8-month period. The FIV-infected cats receiving a placebo had more gingival inflammation than the cART-treated and the control cats; the oral microbiome composition was significantly altered in the presence of cART. Furthermore, this study highlights FIV as a valuable translational model for the oral manifestations of HIV. View this paper
